What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol is a method of transmitting voice traffic through the Internet.  Put simply, this means your voice calls are placed across the Internet, instead of a traditional telephone line.  Problems have been encountered with this technology in the past due to trying to send voice calls over ADSL connections designed purely for data.

The best way to understand this problem is that if your office data connection 'pauses' for half a second when downloading emailing, you would probably not notice.  Half second gaps in a voice call would make the speech unintelligible!

The Sipswitch system has overcome this problem by only using a specialist QOS (Quality of Service) data connection that is specifically designed for voice traffic. This service is not suitable for data, but perfect for quality assured calls. It is possible to have up to 16 simultaneous quality calls over a Sipswitch connection.

The voice traffic does not in fact travel of the public Internet, but is passed via a private network in the local BT exchange back to our Sipswitch platform in Telehouse, London.

Is call quality guaranteed?

Yes!  Although historically and even today, most suppliers offer VoIP services using standard broadband connectivity, Solwise Telephony use only a quality of service guaranteed data connection which is not connected to the public Internet.

This allows us to guarantee call quality equal to that of standard telephone lines and in some cases, better.   We cannot guarantee call quality if you or a home worker choose to use your own broadband connection with our VoIP solution.

What equipment do I need?

All you need is the Sipswitch connection package and some handsets!  The handsets are simply connected back to the Sipswitch box (supplied) with ordinary patch leads.

To completely set up a Sipswitch system, all you need to do is order the Sipswitch package, as many handsets as are needed, and the whole system can be live in your offices within 2 to 3 weeks.  For a comprehensive quote, please contact our sales team on 0845-413-3456.
